What is epidural steroid injection? Our spine (also known as vertebral column) consists of 33 vertebrae but the five sacral and four coccygeal vertebrae are fused together, so taken as one each (so total 26 vertebrae). What are the side effects of epidural steroid injections? Steroids act as double edge sword- if used properly, they can reduce pain without side effects. If high doses or multiple doses are used, they can cause side effects like increased blood sugar levels, weak bones, menstrual irregularity, weight gain, rarely increase in pain. In rare cases, there may be severe allergic reactions, bleeding during the procedure, infection after the procedure. How long the effect of epidural steroid last? The effect usually last for 3-6 months. The duration of pain relief can be increased with ultrasound guided dry needling along with epidural injection and proper physiotherapy exercises. How long does the procedure take? The procedure takes 20-30 minutes. These procedures are done in operation theatre under X ray guidance. Patients are discharged on the same day.
